Commonwealth Welcomes First African Woman Secretary-General
A new era has begun for the Commonwealth with the historic appointment of Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey as Secretary-General — the first African woman to hold the position.
Officially taking office on 1 April 2025, Botchwey steps into this pivotal role at a time of global uncertainty and change. In her inaugural address at Marlborough House in London, she reaffirmed her commitment to the Commonwealth Charter and its core values of democracy, good governance, peace, human rights, and equal opportunity.
With 56 member states representing a third of the world’s population, the Commonwealth faces pressing challenges — from economic instability to climate change. Secretary-General Botchwey highlighted three strategic pillars for her leadership:
1. Empowering women and youth with the tools to thrive in today’s world
2. Revitalising trade and investment to drive inclusive growth across the Commonwealth
3. Tackling climate change, advocating for financial reforms to better support small and vulnerable states
A passionate advocate for unity, her message is one of resilience and collective strength: “Together, we are more than equal to the challenges we face.”
