Secretary-General Welcome - November 2024
After spending two intense weeks at COP29, I am now in the Caribbean to deliver a keynote address. Currently, several Caribbean islands are facing heavy rains, causing significant flooding in some areas. I am disheartened by these worsening climate shocks and the immense suffering they cause - increased debt, infrastructure damage and the trauma of people forced to rebuild repeatedly.
At our official side event at COP29 in Baku, Indigenous Peoples shared their perspectives, and we commissioned a short film to showcase how those who have inhabited Guyana’s Iwokrama Forest for centuries have the traditional knowledge to preserve our forests and enhance global climate resilience.
We also amplified the voices of our small island and vulnerable states and worked towards ensuring that climate finance reaches those at the frontline of this crisis.
We cannot wait for the next storm, famine or COP to act. We need bold leadership to deliver climate justice.
See you in December.
The Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC
Commonwealth Secretary-General
